According to Christopher Meyer, the original creator of the character, Amelia "belongs to the very powerful von Ludeker Astrogator House. At the age of 18, the age of majority in Phoenician society, the von Ludeker scientists implanted what they call the Astrogator Upgrades, cybernetic implants that allow her to hook directly into the ship to control it as the ship moves through the solar system."
He continues, "In Phoenician society astrogators are a strange bunch. While they profess to be Phoenician, they keep to their own holds on the community ships, and rarely, if ever, allow "normal" Phoenicians to enter. They believe themselves above the average human being because they are able to do everything humans are able to do, along with controlling the functions of ships. While they can speak, and do so often, within their little hovels and between one another, binary is the pervading language, as the upgrades allow each astrogator or astrogatress to speak through a sort of wi-fi network." |
